The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) vowed that they will keep the fight alive for Mary Jane Veloso, an overseas Filipino worker sentenced to death for smuggling drugs in Indonesia.
Despite the bleak outcome, NUPL Secretary General Edre Olalia said that they will do everything they can to turn the case around. They are also looking into all possible options to lift Veloso’s death sentence, which include violation of her rights to due process, impropriety of the death penalty, and on humanitarian grounds.
Another option they are exploring is to find the real culprit who Veloso claimed had set her up. She said that a family friend had set her up to carry 2.6 kilos of heroin placed in her luggage. She was arrested at the Yogyakarta Airport in April 2010.
