A Singaporean employer was charged for “wrongfully confining” and beating her Filipina domestic helper on October 2012.
Jonna Memeje Muegue claimed that her employer, Chua Siew Peng, physically abused her for eating fish supposedly not meant for her. Chua’s grandmother initially punished her by pulling her hair, slamming her to the wall of the kitchen toilet, and pouring bleach on her arms and hands.
When Chua came home, she beat Muegue, too.
Muegue escaped from her employer’s condominium the next day by jumping from the sixth-floor bedroom window to the fifth floor of the adjacent building. She broke her legs from the fall, but she managed to report the abuse to the Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics, after which she was taken to a hospital then a nursing home.
The fate of the Chua and her mother will be announced in the coming weeks.
