Senator Ralph Recto proposed that the Bureau of Customs (BOC) buy closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) to make sure there are no abnormalities in the planned random inspections of balikbayan boxes.
Recto proposed this following the BOC’s announcement to implement random inspections of balikbayan boxes as these were being used for “technical smuggling.”
Customs Deputy Commissioner Agaton Uvero said technical smugglers use balikbayan boxes to avoid paying the right taxes.
Recto said the inspections should be recorded via CCTV so BOC has proof that there are no anomalies during inspection, just in case a consignee complains.
