Filipinos in San Francisco, California gathered outside the court house on August 17 to support an elderly Filipino-American couple facing eviction from the room they were renting in the Ingleside district.
Remy and Robertson Bautista were living in a single family home with their landlord Lucia Maliwat.
Maliwat fell to the floor after suffering from a stroke, and the Bautistas helped her by calling 911. Maliwat’s daughter Geraldine Luna then decided to move from San Diego to take care of her mother.
Ten days later, Luna hired a lawyer to serve the Bautistas an eviction notice. The Bautistas are now fighting to stay in the home by filing a wrongful eviction case against their landlord.
Luna’s lawyer, Atty. Daniel Bornstein, argued the Bautistas were hired as Maliwat’s caregivers, thereby making them evictable as will.
The Bautistas deny they were hired as caregivers. They were just tenants who cared enough to help their landlord.
