RIYADH, Saudi Arabia security forces have arrested a Syrian expatriate and a Filipino woman suspected of involvement in terrorist activities, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Saturday.
The Syrian, identified as Mohamed al-Barazi, is suspected of turning the house they shared in the Saudi capital into a bomb factory, the ministry spokesman said.
The Filipina known as Gioi Aban Bali Nang or Lady joy a runaway household service worker illegally living with Mohamed al-Barazi and making explosive materials and suicide bomb belts.
It is believed that Joy was given the job of sewing explosive belts to be used in the planned suicide mission. The belts have now been seized by authorities.
Mohamed al-Barazi had planted several explosive devices around his home in the al-Fayhaa neighborhood in the Saudi capital. It is believed he was intending for security forces to enter his home, before setting off the bombs.
After the house had been made safe, police recovered two explosives belts, 10 containers of bomb-making materials and two firearms, the ministry said.
“The house as a whole was booby trapped by the perpetrator with severe explosive materials, indifferent to the lives of innocent residents and visitors to the neighborhood,” it said.
Asked on state television whether Barazi was suspected of links to the Daesh (Islamic State), the spokesman said authorities “did not yet have sufficient evidence to make any direct connection with this terrorist group.”
