A 53-year-old Filipino named Luisito Villacruz was arrested on October 25 after his wife was brought to a hospital for major head injuries that caused her paralysis.
San Jose Mercury News quoted the San Leandro, California police as saying that the 63-year-old Filipina, who is not identified, was injured in a beating October 21 before midnight at their home.
San Leandro Police Lieutenant Robert McManus told the media that the woman is in critical condition. Her brain has swollen and has bled. Furthermore, she is paralyzed on one side of her body.
Villacruz is being detained at the San Leandro Jail and is suspected of domestic violence resulting in great bodily injury.
The California media also reported that the police found a rifle and a pistol on the kitchen table when they searched the couple’s home. One of the weapons was loaded.
The police also said that this is not the first time Villacruz had been in trouble with the law. Court records showed that he had prior arrests due to drug possession and resisting arrest.
The Villacruz’s neighbors declined to be interviewed on camera, but they praised the victim. One neighbor called her an “angel” for being sweet, such as bringing baked goods during Christmas.
The rest of the neighbors is planning to pray for her recovery and create a tribute of flowers.
