A 41-year-old Indian man attacked his former girlfriend for ignoring his multiple phone calls.
Using a penknife, he slashed her face, throat, and wrist. The attack left her permanently disfigured.
On February 11, the district court sentenced construction worker Palaiyan Murugadass to jail for four years with nine strokes of the cane, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.
The district court heard that Murugadass had been in a relationship with a 38-year-old Filipino domestic worker since 2013.
She broke up with him in July 2015, but he continued to call her up to 30 times a day. She ignored his calls.
In the afternoon of August 23, Murugadass armed himself with a penknife with a 7cm blade and confronted her in Tampines Street 33. She walked past him despite his threats, and that was when he slashed her throat, then her cheek.
The bleeding Filipina shouted for help, and a passerby called the police.

Murugadass fled, throwing the penknife into the nearby bushes before taking a taxi back to his dormitory.
The victim was taken to the hospital, where the doctors operated on her windpipe and stitched up the cuts on her hand and wrist. Her employers gave her a month of hospitalization leave.
