The number of deaths due to suicides from overseas Filipino workers in Hong Kong in January 2016 equaled the number of cases reported throughout 2015.
Vice Consul Alex Vallespin revealed this case at a meeting with the Filipino community in Hong Kong on January 28. Three of these cases involved unpaid debts, while the fourth case was about a troubled relationship.
The Philippine Consulate General is lining up health forums for the Filipino there, and one of the topics is about depression and suicide. They will announce the schedules soon.
They will also conduct financial literacy training and seminars once every three months.
In 2015, four Filipinos were reported to have committed suicide. The number of suicide cases in 2014 is three.
As of September 2015, nearly 200,000 Filipinos were living and working in Hong Kong, 90% of which are household service workers.
