Woman’s headless body found floating in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour
The headless body of a woman wearing black underpants and a single sock was found floating in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour on Tuesday, prompting police to launch a criminal investigation.
The body was sighted about 1.5km off Western Wholesale Food Market in Kennedy Town by a male passenger aboard a passing vessel shortly before 3.30pm, police said.
A Fire Services Department spokeswoman said three fireboats were sent to the scene and that the woman’s body was pulled from the water and brought aboard a Marine police launch.
“It’s a headless body without a right hand,” a police source said. “It had on black underpants, but they were lowered down her legs, and there was a sock on the left foot.”
“Initial examination showed the body had not started decomposing. It’s possible the body had been in the water for less than 24 hours.”
He said police believed the woman was of Asian descent, possibly Chinese, and that she was between 20 and 40 years old.
Police said an autopsy would be carried out to establish her cause of death.
A police spokeswoman said officers searched the area but no other clothes, personal belongings or identification documents were found at the scene.
