Filipinos are naturally caring and sweet, making them the best candidate for a caregiving job. Josefina Amparo Hosena proves that it is true as she was awarded as one of Singapore’s 2017 Model Caregivers.
Leona Heng, 5, suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as Edward’s Syndrome. This disorder leads to intellectual disability, heart and growth deficiencies.
Heng is fed through a tube. Every hour, Hosana wakes up to feed her with milk then carefully disconnecting the tube so Leona won’t wake up. She tirelessly does this every night.
Aside from providing milk for the young girl, Hosana should also readily respond in emergency cases such as heart failure. Even during her break, she still brings Leona anywhere she goes.
“She puts her heart and soul into it. It’s challenging as she does not get enough sleep on some days”, said Marcus Heng, father of Leona.
The Model Caregiver Awards started last 2007, organized by AWWA Caregiver Service, National Council of Social Service, Agency for Integrated Care and other charities, according to Inquirer.net.
Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Health, was the one who handed the awards during the ceremony. According to her, the recipients represent love and sacrifice towards their job. She cited the experiences of Hosena as a favorable example of a good domestic helper who treats their charges like their family.
