We’ve heard all sorts of horror stories encountered by Filipinos working abroad. Despite the increasing number of abuses towards our OFWs, there are still a lot who aspire to become one. Nonetheless, they consider this as the only way to provide the financial needs of their families in the Philippines.
Here is another inspiring story of an Overseas Filipino Worker in Kuwait.
Lhorie is a single mom. She is working as a domestic helper in Kuwait. Before acquiring what she have today, Lhorie first went through a lot of struggle and pain.
According to Lhorie, her grandmother took care of her ever since her father passed. She was 1 year old back then. Her mother, who got married later on, took her older sister. Lhorie felt jealous but was left without a choice.
Since then, Lhorie’s life became a living hell.
“Nag aral aq [ako] lola qlng [ko lang] ng alga [alaga] sakin pero lagi niya aq iniwan.iniwanan ng bigas sabon pero alawans minsan wala,kya ng tiis aq [ako] lakas [lakad] araw araw punta school minsan walang almusal pasok parin.dahil isa aqng [akong] scholarship student,” said Lhorie.
Ever since she was a child, she dreamed of going to Dubai. That dream pushed her to pursue her studies despite all the hardships in life.
During summer vacations, she goes out to work. She became a housemaid. She used her earnings to finance her studies. Lhorie also did other jobs to earn money.
“Minsan pg wala aqng baon ngharvest aq ng mais bayad noon isang sako is 8 pesos sobrang init pa mgkasugat sugat kpa.nglilinis aq sa bahay ng mga tao para my alawans aq,” Lhorie said.
Unfortunately, when she reached 3rd year high school, Lhorie was influenced by her friends to try different vices, prompting her to stop studying.
Lhorie then went to Manila to work as a housemaid in a Chinese family. “Sumama aq with my bestfrend pgdating manila work ko kasambahay Chinese amo q.then super sama ng ugali..dat time is year 2007 at I’m 17 years old,” she said. “dq [di ko] tinapos 2years contact q sa amo q tumakas aq.then lipat sa new amo puro pangit ugli puro Chinese.”
During the darkest moments of her life, she met her husband and they decided to live together at the same house. She still continued to work in different establishments.
“Ng work parin aq nging sales lady sa quiapo sa mga cp/laptop accessories.bakery naging maraming aqng karanasan ng trabaho since nakasama q siya,” Lhorie said.
She got pregnant last Dec. 2010. Unfortunately, their relationship did not went on smoothly. They were fighting all the time. Her live-in partner don’t have work so she became the breadwinner of her family.
They finally broke up on 2014.
Lhorie the decided to work abroad to provide for her child. She applied in different agencies.
September 9, 2016 when they went to Kuwait. After 3 weeks of waiting, she was finally hired as a domestic helper.
Lhorie hopes a buy a lot for her family. She strives very hard despite the stress and homesickness she feels every day.
Lhorie is just one of the many modern heroes today. Overseas Filipino Workers strive to earn money for their families in the Philippines. Her life-story is an inspiring piece of hard-work, perseverance and courage to take on all the challenges in life.
