A 22-year-old Pinay married a Chinese in Hong Kong just to be able to have a Hong Kong residency. Unfortunately, authorities had discovered that she is still married to a Filipino who is still alive thus; their marriage had not been dissolved.
As marrying two people is considered bigamy and considered unlawful in Hong Kong, the Chinese marriage will be invalid and the Filipina domestic helper will have to face charges against her.
However, the OFW reasoned out that she had no communication with her husband for quite a long time so she assumed that there’s no need for her to file nullity of their marriage.
For the meantime, she has to place a bail amounting to HK$ 1,000 and will have to remain in jail while awaiting for the court’s decision on October 30.
Vice Consul Robert Quintin emphasized then that in maintaining good civil relations between the Philippines and other countries, OFWs should submit and respect existing legal procedures.
