Five Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia filed cases against their employer who treated them badly, says the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Three Filipino women were among the victims as they were taken advantage of physically by their employer. The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah was able to send a team in Madinah province, Al Ula to help the five Filipino domestic helpers.
Additionally, some of these workers were being passed on to different employers on top of being badly-treated by the original ones. They also need to do odd jobs to different employers for free.
The 5 OFWs are given assistance by a translator and a lawyer when they went on to file a complaint at the Al Ula Public Prosecutor’s Office.
At the end of the preliminary investigation, the employer who was accused of the bad activities was instantly detained. The OFWs are being assisted when filing their complaints and will be sheltered at the Consulate for the time being.
OFWs-to be are expected to be keen when accepting job offers for work abroad. It is best to only transact with legit recruitment agencies accredited by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration. Avoid being a victim of illegal recruitment as this could lead you to a more complicated situation.
