Three OFWs under quarantine in Hong Kong were denied food by her employers.
According to a group that’s been feeding the three Filipina domestic helpers, they refused to report the incident to the Hong Kong Labor Department as well as the Philippine Consulate fearing that they might lose their jobs.
However, according to the Mission for Migrant Workers general manager Cynthia Tellez, Filipinos going through the same plight should not hesitate to report and ask for help because the Hong Kong Labor Department clearly stated that employers must shoulder the quarantine expenses of their employees.
“It could be that the employers did not know about their obligations, or were assured by their agencies that they need not provide for food as well,” says Tellez. “In any case, they should complain because what happened to them was not right.”
As for the payment of salaries, it would be another thing. However, the Hong Kong Labor Department advised the employers to be “considerate and show understanding” to their workers who are undergoing quarantine.
If there are such cases, there are also those who were genuinely cared for by their employers, their salaries were paid in full and their employers personally prepare their meals that were sent into their rooms.
