A Filipina in Hong Kong was imprisoned for taking a fraudulent loan amounting to $26,000 (PhP167,421) last year. The Filipina is nine months pregnant and overstayed her domestic helper’s visa.
The defendant identified as M.J. Aquino will be imprisoned for eight months for “obtaining money by deception” and another two months for “breach of a condition of stay”, according to Magistrate Bina Chainrai.
Because she will be giving birth anytime soon, the OFW will have to do it while in custody. There are facilities inside the jail for delivering babies, the magistrate claims.
Despite her situation, Magistrate Chainrai decided to push through with her sentencing as her offenses require immediate jail custody. The Filipina expectant mother was already in jail since her arrest on April 29.
Though the prosecution applied for compensation for the money that Aquino illegally took from the moneylender, Prime Credit, the magistrate denied it after the Filipina claimed she has no money to pay it.
According to reports, Aquino used the money to help her two friends who in turn didn’t pay her. It is said that she applied for a loan but after three days, she lost her job after her employer fired her. Aquino did not reveal to the moneylender that she was fired from her job and collected the money.
Aquino has three children in the Philippines with her Filipino boyfriend. However, she got pregnant in Hong Kong with an Indian national.
