An OFW in Hong Kong who was rescued from her employers turns out to have a stage 4 ovarian cancer.
52-year-old Filipina domestic helper identified as Merle Bonagua was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer which has spread to her stomach. According to the OFW, she suffered from frequent pain in her abdomen and weight loss so she decided to seek medical advice.
At first Bonagua consulted a doctor online as her employers refused to allow her to go the hospital, due to the pandemic. However, despite knowing the condition she is in, the OFW confessed that she feels rested.
“Mas maayos na po ang pakiramdam ko ngayon,” says the OFW while lying in a hospital bed. Images of Bonagua first surfaced online and touched the hearts of so many netizens. In the said photo, the OFW can be seen sitting on a wheelchair as she holds her bag for her check-up at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The Filipina lost so much weight which has alarmed a lot of netizens.
The Filipina domestic worker worked in Hong Kong for 17 years with her first employer. However, on her second employer, Bonagua was treated badly giving her very little food. When she felt pain on her abdomen, the OFW tried to ask her employer to send her to the doctor but to no avail. If they agreed, she was given a lot of work prior to her consultation. After finishing all of it, the clinic has already closed.
After telling her friend about her problems with her employer, Bonagua was referred to the HKOFW who rescued her.
