The Kafala system in Gulf countries has drawn a lot of controversies for many years. However, In Saudi Arabia, they are planning to scrap this sponsorship system for domestic workers, says the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday.
“There is no turning back because the reforms have started already,” says Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Sarah Arriola during the Laging Handa briefing.
“Saudi Arabia is already studying whether to include our household service workers,” she added.
Currently, the only ones who are benefited from the Labor Reform Initiative in Saudi Arabia are skilled and semi-skilled workers.
But in the new policy, is expected to allow foreign workers to have a change of jobs thru the transfer of sponsorship from the current employer into another employer. They can also transfer sponsorship if they leave the country and return back or secure the final exit visa without the need for consent from their employer.
