We’ve all heard of employers not paying their domestic workers or abusing them in numerous ways. But it is not all the time that employers are being reported. There are also instances in which domestic workers get involved in malicious activities such as theft.
In Hong Kong, a Filipina domestic worker pleaded guilty to stealing more than HK$500,000 from her American employer over the span of 14 months.
33-year-old OFW June Jennie B. Garaza will be imprisoned according to the sentence of Magistrate Peony Wong. Garaza admitted that she took HK$538,500 from Stephen Peeples, her employer.
But the lawyer of the Filipina appealed that his client is given leniency because Garaza only did the act because she was paying for the cancer treatment of her mother who later succumbed to death.
Despite admitting the charges, the magistrate still disregarded the appeal stating that the Filipina will only be given a one-third discount because what she did is a ‘serious breach of contract’. She was supposed to spend 18 months in jail but the magistrate gave her a discount of 6 months.
Since she was detained for seven months already, it is expected that she will be released after a couple of months.
