A total of 308 distressed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) received their COVID-19 vaccination in the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
There was one doctor and three staff members who are assigned by the Saudi Ministry of Health to facilitate the administration of vaccines to the shelters of OFWs from Sept. 12 to 14, following the request of the government of the Philippines.
Philippine’s Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. requested for this vaccination to happen after receiving a phone call from the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Ahmed Al-Jubeir.
Adnan Alonto, the Philippines ’ Ambassador to Saudi Arabia expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for taking care of the health and safety of migrant workers together with their families.
In Saudi Arabia, there are particular resource centers that are made as temporary shelters that are helping distressed migrant workers.
Because of the rise in unemployment due to COVID-19, many migrant workers lose their jobs and were left in shelters that take care of distressed OFWs. Filipino workers are hard-hit as the crisis goes on. Uncertainties with their employment and jobs remain a common problem.
