During the toughest times, what or who inspires you the most?
To this ECE Board Exam Top 8, the sacrifices of his domestic worker mother are the force that pushes him to work harder, to work better.
“It is difficult to be far physically but if you really think of all the hard work of your parents who are domestic helpers or OFW, of course, you will do it as inspiration. You will do it as your strength to study hard to improve in yourself because they are the ones who are struggling, of course, it’s also difficult for them because they are far from us, their children, their spouse, their family, the foundation of our endurance.
Jacgil Antoni Oculam reminisces those times when communication is still not as strong as it is today. There are no social media like Facebook and no video calls where you can see face to face your loved ones. Although he had thoughts of why his mother needed to part from him, his father managed to explain the entire thing to Jacgil.
In 2015, Jacgil’s father passed away due to an accident. Jacgil felt so down and devastated for losing the person he sees every day.
Every time somebody asks about the work of his parents, Jacgil always tells them the truth that she is a domestic worker in Hong Kong. He is not ashamed of that because there’s no reason to be.
The mother of Jacgil started working abroad even before she gave birth to Jack. She worked in Hong Kong from 1987 to 2011.
