One of the two Filipinos in New Westminster, Canada has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment over his involvement in the death of a Filipina.
It was on March 2021 that the burned remains of a certain Maria Cecilia Loreto were found near Burnaby Park in New Westminster.
One of the suspects was identified as Carlo Castillo Tobias, 22, who admitted that they waited for Loreto to get back to her rented apartment. The incident took place last March 17, 2021.
According to Tobias, he went inside his apartment of Loreto and waited for her at the back of the door. When the victim entered, he punched her in the face and lost consciousness.
The court record states that a kitchen knife was used to stab the 49-year-old victim. Together with another suspect, a 15-year-old teen, they took the victim and wrapped her with a blanket. Then they took her to Burnaby Park and burned her.
New Westminster Judge Peter La Prairie accepted the early guilty plea of Tobias and he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment over manslaughter charges and acting as an accessory to murder after the fact.
It was later found out that the minor suspect was the one who killed the victim, according to the autopsy report.
The minor, meanwhile, will be facing a first-degree murder charge and indignity to human remains charge. His identity was not revealed to the public because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act in the country.
