Who said that you can only get P200,000 monthly pay upon working a corporate job? This Filipina in Australia can proudly disagree with this.
Apple picking is a well-known job in Australia. This Filipina is so grateful that she was able to earn about P200,000 a month just by picking fruits.
Mariel Larsen, 23 years old, married an Australian man who is also a fruit picker. She was living in the country for 4 years.
To help her husband financially, Mariel also became a fruit picker. Currently, she is earning as much as AU$3,000 – AU$6,000 or PhP113,000 to PhP226,000 a month.
“Nakapunta po ako dito sa Australia dahil nakapag-asawa po ako ng isang Australyano, so dinala niya po ako dito sa Australia,” Mariel shared.
But if you think that their job is easy, you must think twice. They had to fill a huge bin with 300-500 kilos of fruits.
“By the end of the day, as in mararamdaman niyo po talaga yung sakit ng likod niyo, dahil nakatayo po kayo [buong araw] and then mabigat po yung bag,” Mariel confessed.
According to Mariel, they do this job on a couple of farms every year.
“May routine na po kami every year. Meron po kaming farm na permanently na po talaga na pabalik-balik kami sa iba’t ibang prutas na tinatrabahuan po naming,” says Mariel.
Because their job is fieldwork, their family lives in a camper van. This way, it is convenient for them to go from one farm to another.
“At first, parang mahirap po siya,” says the Filipina. “At the same time, nae-enjoy ko po na nakakarating kami sa iba’t ibang lugar in Australia.”
“And I really love na parang [family] adventure kasi may anak din kami. So na-e-enjoy ko na rin siya.”
Mariel also confessed that they are working so hard because they wanted to build their own house.
“We’re really working hard po talaga this time na makapagbahay kami in the next three years. Target po namin dahil mag-five years old na po yung anak naming,” says Mariel.
Mariel also launched a YouTube channel called Marielasin to show how she does her job.
Although Mariel is doing a decent job, there are still people who had negative remarks toward her. A netizen once said that it is better for Mariel to just take care of her children instead of picking fruits.
“Sinasabi ko naman, hindi naman siya kailangan [trabaho], pero ako kasi, gusto ko talaga patunayan sa asawa ko na gusto ko talagang tumulong,” Mariel argued. The husband of Mariel is also supportive of what she does as long as it makes her happy.
