The news of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) becoming an instant millionaire has been going rounds on social media. According to reports, the OFW found pieces of meteorite that are worth millions.
The incident happened last July 27 in Saudi Arabia. It is said that the meteorite costs 11.6 million riyals or approximately PhP170 million.
The lucky OFW, whose name remains hidden, will return to the Philippines with millions in her pocket after a meteorite fell into the backyard of her employer’s house.
According to a Facebook post, the OFW heard a loud noise in the backyard and eventually saw the rock still with fire.
In the video, the OFW can be seen holding the meteorite. However, when she first saw it, the rocks were very hot and she had difficulty touching it. The toughness of the rock is also very different from ordinary rocks. When she cut the stone, she saw something like crystals inside.
Meteorites also called “bulalakaw” in tagalog, are rocks in space. They are called “meteoroids” when they are still in outer space, ‘meteors’ once they entered the Earth and “meteorites” once it hits the ground.
According to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, tens of thousands of meteorites that are grain-sized enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day.
There are different types of meteorites – the Iron Meteorites, Stony Meteorites, and Stony-Iron meteorites.
It’s highly possible that the ones that the OFW found were Iron meteorites because they were magnetic.
According to scientists, most meteorites are made up of metallic iron while others are solid-iron. These space rocks are hard to find, causing their value to spike up.
The OFW already sold the meteorite and expected to return to the country even though her contract hasn’t ended.
